Dump truck overturns on SR 70 in Greene County, pinning car, injuring woman

GREENE COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Local and state authorities are investigating a crash that resulted in a woman needing to be flown to the hospital after she was pinned in her car by an overturned dump truck.

The crash has been cleared but it happened this morning, around 7:39 a.m. on State Route 70, that’s the Lonesome Pine Trail, at Marvin Road.

Authorities closed the road after a 2007 Mack dump truck overturned on a car carrying two people – a 41-year-old woman and her daughter a 16-year-old girl, both from Rogersville.

A preliminary report indicates the truck, driven by 53-year-old John Helton of Whitesburg, TN, was traveling north on the state route with it crossed the double yellow lines around a right-hand curve and lost control. The truck tipped over and landed on a 2014 Hyundai sedan traveling in the opposite direction with the mom and daughter inside.

The daughter appeared to be okay, Greene County Sheriff Pat Hankins told News Channel 11, but the driver was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center. The sheriff said the woman was talking as she was taken away from the scene.

According to a report, the 16-year-old was able to climb out of the car. She was also taken to the hospital to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport.

Two wrecker trucks arrived on the scene to lift the truck off the car. According to a report, the driver of the car was pinned under the truck for nearly two hours. Emergency crews had to wait until the dump truck was lifted before they were able to remove her from the car.

The sheriff’s office says the driver of the truck appeared to be okay, but according to a report charges are pending.

It’s not known at this time what caused the truck to overturn. The sheriff’s office added that the Tennessee Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation of the crash.
