KPD officers arrest man who allegedly robbed, kidnapped mother and grandmother

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – Kingsport Police Department officers said a suspect wanted in connection with a reported kidnapping and robbery was arrested Monday afternoon.

According to a KPD news release, officers received a tip that Matthew S. Quillen, 27, had returned to his mother’s house on Bell Ridge Drive in Kingsport.

On May 11, officers and detectives were called to the home in reference to a late report of a robbery and a kidnapping that happened on May 10.

Quillen and Kristen P. Way reportedly went to the home to visit Quillen’s mom and grandmother, and at some point pulled a BB gun out and ordered them into the living room.

His mom and grandmother were then bound by their hands and feet with duct tape, and taped to each other.

According to a previous release, Quillen put underwear into their mouths and then put duct tape over their mouths.

Quillen and Way then ransacked the home and took an antique coin collection.

Around 7 a.m. on May 11, Quillen and Way released his mother and grandmother and they left the scene, taking the duct tape and other evidence with them in a trash bag.

The BB gun was left at the scene and the trash full of evidence was found on the side of the road about 100 yards from the house.

The victims then reported the incident to police.

“When you have somebody who is willing to go as far to duct tape up his own mother and grandmother and hold them at gun point and commit a robbery, again his own mother and grandmother, I think somebody like that is pretty much capable of anything,” Tom Patton with Kingsport Police said.

Way was found at her home and was taken to the justice center to be interviewed. She was later charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping.

She was taken to the Kingsport City Jail, but was later transferred to the Sullivan County Jail in Blountville.

Way was being held on $50,000 bond.

Quillen was not located and was considered armed and dangerous before he was found at his mother’s home on Monday afternoon.

Officers arrested Quillen and he was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of especially aggravated kidanpping.

He was taken to the Kingsport City Jail, where he is being held without bonding pending his arraignment.
