Tornado warning expires for Sullivan, Carter, Johnson counties; Leaves trail of damage

NORTHEAST, TN (WJHL) – The National Weather Service in Morristown issued a tornado warning for Sullivan, Carter, Johnson counties until 2:45 p.m. Friday.

Around 2:20 p.m., a severe thunderstorm — capable of producing a tornado was located 9 miles southeast of Bristol, Tenn.

Quarter size hail was also expected.

According to Dr. Kevin Ward, Carter County School superintendent, students were sheltered in place in the schools.

Johnson County Director of Schools Michelle Simcox said the school system was also holding their students in place.

The school system said they also notified parents to let them know.

Simcox said the students were in safe positions under tornado measures drill.
