Volunteers decorate veterans’ graves with Christmas wreaths at Mountain Home

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL)- Saturday people across the United States paid tribute to our nation’s veterans, and that includes people right here in our region.

Following a ceremony Saturday afternoon at Mountain Home National Cemetery, volunteers placed more than 4,000 wreaths on veterans’ graves.

It is part of a nationwide effort to pay respect to the men and women who are serving in the armed forces, and those that are laid to rest at the cemetery.

“It’s really touching to have so many volunteers just want to recognize the veterans, I’ve got 33 years of service in and when I die, I want someone to come visit me, 3 years ago when we started out we have 300 wreaths here and now we are over 4,000, I think we are making a difference,” Allen Castle said.

Mountain Home was just one of more than a thousand wreath laying ceremonies that took place across the country Saturday.

At Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia they had plans to lay 245,000 wreaths.
