ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) – The Elizabethton police department says Demetrius Covington is expected to have an extradition hearing this week.
Police in Dayton, Ohio arrested Covington last Wednesday. In Elizabethton, police charged Covington with first degree murder in the death of his three-year-old stepson, Ja’Kari Phillips.
Sunday evening, family and friends celebrated the life of the 3-year-old. Ja’Kari’s mother AyonJaleea Phillips told me her son was happy and that he loved music and loved to sing.
A home video his mother shared with News Channel 11 is now a keepsake for the family of memories from a happier time.
The video is from before that fateful day when Ja’Kari’s mother rushed him to the hospital, only to be intercepted by EMS due to the boy’s worsening condition.
Court documents reveal that Ja’Kari had multiple bruises and scrapes all over his body. Medical personnel reported he had brain swelling and internal abdominal injury.
He would remain on life support for several days before dying.
“Ja’kari was loved by everyone who had the chance to know him. He could put a smile on your face no matter what kind of day you were having,” AyonJaleea Phillips said.
His mother said he enjoyed playing outside and going to the playground, going down the slides were his favorite. Meanwhile Demetrius Covington is awaiting extradition from Dayton, Ohio back to Elizabethton
