SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – UPDATE: Around 7:45 this evening, an officer with Bluff City Police Department observed a vehicle matching the description of the robbery and kidnapping suspect from earlier today.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle and the suspect did not stop. The pursuit eventually reached Interstate 81 and continued south. The suspect exited the Interstate at exit 4. The pursuit continued and eventually ended when the suspect vehicle left the roadway on Old Andrew Johnson Highway near Jefferson City, Tennessee.
The suspect, Robert Howland was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Sullivan County Jail.
Numerous law enforcement agencies from the area assisted in the pursuit.
Deputies with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s office are looking for a man who robbed a convenient store and attempted to kidnap a woman. Authorities say on Saturday morning Robert Howland walked into “Big Orange Market” located off of Highway 26 on Bristol, he pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the cashier.
Authorities say after Howland took money, he then held the clerk at gunpoint and made her leave the store with him. A customer drove into the parking lot as Howland was attempting to force the clerk into his truck, that’s when he pushed the clerk away and drove off in his truck.
Authorities say Howland is considered armed and dangerous. There are currently warrants for his arrest that the United States Marshals Service holds for failure to register as a sex offender. In addition, a warrant for aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping is being obtained by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office.
