ROAN MOUNTAIN, TN (WJHL) – The Tennessee Division of Forestry is hoping to have a 60-acre wildfire contained by the end of the day, and said no homes are currently in danger.
James Heaton with the Tennessee Division of Forestry said late night and early morning showers helped get the fire to 40 percent containment as of Thursday afternoon.
Heaton said, “We received a little bit of rain here on the scene last night which really helped in the efforts today. We are hoping in the next few hours to have containment and look to be monitoring it for the near future.”
The Tennessee Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forestry Services are combing efforts to fight the fire 25-30 people on the mountain.
Heaton said the prevention of these wildfires starts with the public.
“We are running a severe deficit on rainfall this year. Most of the area is either abnormally dry or severely dry. That makes fire is much more easily started. We encourage everyone to heed to the burn ban”, said Heaton
Arson is expected at this point and the fire is under investigation. Officials say if you have any information that may help the investigation to please call 1.800.762.3017.
