Roan Mountain wildfire forty percent contianed

ROAN MOUNTAIN, TN (WJHL) – The Tennessee Division of Forestry is hoping to have a 60-acre wildfire contained by the end of the day, and said no homes are currently in danger.

roan-fire-2Crews were dispatched Wednesday afternoon to Tiger Creek Road to the report of a wildfire.

James Heaton with the Tennessee Division of Forestry said late night and early morning showers helped get the fire to 40 percent containment as of Thursday afternoon.

Heaton said, “We received a little bit of rain here on the scene last night which really helped in the efforts today. We are hoping in the next few hours to have containment and look to be monitoring it for the near future.”

They found the fire burning in a very remote rough part of the terrain at the ridge of the mountain. Fire officials say the area is very steep and treacherous.roan-fire-1

The Tennessee Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forestry Services are combing efforts to fight the fire 25-30 people on the mountain.

Heaton said the prevention of these wildfires starts with the public.

“We are running a severe deficit on rainfall this year. Most of the area is either abnormally dry or severely dry. That makes fire is much more easily started. We encourage everyone to heed to the burn ban”, said Heaton

Arson is expected at this point and the fire is under investigation. Officials say if you have any information that may help the investigation to please call 1.800.762.3017.
