ABINGDON, VA (WJHL) – The Washington County, VA Sheriff’s Office is following a report of a possible sighting by a citizen of one of Tennessee’s most wanted.
Demetrius Deshawn Covington was added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s most wanted list. He’s wanted by the Elizabethton Police Department and the TBI for the first-degree murder of a 3-year-old.
Sheriff Fred Newman says the possible sighting of Covington was around the U.S. Route 19 area near Abingdon.
Virginia State Police told us they are on the lookout for Covington and the vehicle in which he was driving – a white chevy impala.
The sheriff’s office and the US Marshals Service are also following up on the possible sighting.
On Monday, Elizabethton police charged Covington with aggravated child neglect after a 3-year-old boy – his step-son – was taken to a hospital in critical condition by his mother. The boy was said to have numerous injuries.
The TBI and the Elizabethton police revealed on Tuesday the child had died as a result of the injuries.
Covington, 28, is also known as Demetrius Somerville.
According to the TBI, Covington was last seen driving a 2006 white Chevrolet Impala with a Tennessee tag Z31-82E. He is described as being 5’7” and weighing about 185 pounds. He is African-American has dark hair and brown eyes. The TBI says he is a known member of the Bloods street gang and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 1-800-TBI- FIND. There is a $3,500 reward offered for information leading to his arrest.
