(WJHL) – The Federal Trade Commission weighed in on the proposed merger between Mountain States Health Alliance and Wellmont Health system Wednesday.
In a statement to the Tennessee Department of Health, the FTC said they oppose the merger.
In a news release on their website, the FTC said “the proposed merger presents substantial rick of serious competitive and consumer harm in the form of higher healthcare costs, lower quality, reduced innovation and reduced access to care.”
The FTC previously voiced their opposition to the merger to Virginia health regulators.
Despite those concerns, the Southwest Virginia Health Authority unanimously approved the merger between MSHA and Wellmont.
The merger must still be approved by the Virginia health commissioner and the Tennessee Department of Health.
