Kingsport breaks ground on Gold Star Families Memorial

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – Kingsport will soon have a new way to honor the families who have lost someone who served our country.

gold-star-familiesHershel “Woody” Williams said it is his goal to have all of the Gold Star Families honored with these memorials all around the country. And Williams, along with the Chamber of Commerce are making it happen in Kingsport.

The memorial will be erected at the same location of the Kingsport War Memorial. Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony there on Monday.

The guest speaker at the ceremony  was Gold Star Mother Brenda Shelton, whose son Senior Airman Benjamin D. White, died in 2010 while serving during Operation Enduring

Shelton said when something like this happens, you just have to keep the legacy of the person who made the sacrifice alive.

“You go on and just try to make sure that their sacrifices are not forgotten. That their name is spoken and that they’re remembered”, said Shelton.

The total cost of the project is $50,000. Officials said they have raised approximately $28,000 of that, but said they are confident they will raise all of the money needed to complete this project.

Donations are still needed. If you would like to make one, just call the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce at (423) 392-8800.
