JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – The government agency that works to protect consumers stopped by the Tri-Cities Monday night, and it was to repeat its opposition to the proposed merger with the region’s largest hospital systems.
The Federal Trade Commission appeared at the final public hearing for the Mountain States Health Alliance-Wellmont Health System merger.
This was the last chance for the people to bring up their concerns and questions to the board overseeing the merger’s approval in Tennessee.
No decisions were made, but nearly two dozen people spoke directly to Tennessee Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner.
FTC staff members said the merger would without a doubt bring challenges for the consumer because it would create a monopoly with little to no competition.
Dreyzehner will meet with the FTC again on Dec. 8.
He said the Tennessee Department of Health will keep evaluating the application for the merger until it reaches a decision.
