ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) – Elizabethton Police Department officers are searching for a man suspected of aggravated child neglect, as an investigation is underway into a 3-year-old boy having numerous injuries.
According to an EPD news release, officers started an investigation on Nov. 18 into the suspicious injury/medical condition of a 3-year-old child.
During an investigation, it was revealed that the boy’s stepfather, Demetrius Covington, also known as Demetrius Somerville, had called the child’s mother at work and said the child was injured and asked her to come home.
The child’s mother came home and said her son was having trouble breathing, so she decided to take him to the emergency room.
According to the release, while the mother was headed to the ER, the child’s condition got worse, she stopped and started CPR. The child’s mother reportedly called 911 while stopped on Broad Street performing CPR on the child, and officers and EMS crews arrived and took the child to a local hospital.
The 3-year-old boy is reportedly in critical condition and was found with numerous injuries.
Covington allegedly left the home after the mother left to take her son to the hospital and has not been heard from since.
According to the release, based on information in the investigation, Covington was charged with aggravated child neglect.
Officers have since received information that Covington was believed to be in Bristol, Tenn. on Sunday, but they were not sure of his exact whereabouts.
Covington was last seen driving a 2003 White Chevrolet Impala.
