KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Knoxville Police Department reports a man died at approximately 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning following a police pursuit.
An officer began following an SUV because he believed the driver may have been under the influence.
When the officer tried to get close, the SUV turned onto I-275 at Baxter Avenue and accelerated.

As the officer approached the crash he saw two passengers. The driver climbed into the back seat and exited through the back door. He then fled on foot, and jumped off a bridge. He fell 36.5 feet onto a gravel lot and was transported to UT Medical where he was pronounced dead. He is identified as Bronson Williams, 24, of Knoxville.
Officers searched the vehicle and discovered two firearms and illegal narcotics inside.
The passenger of the vehicle was taken into custody and released after being interviewed. Knoxville Police say charges may be filed following the conclusion of the investigation.
The crash caused road closures for several hours over night at the I-40 at I-275 ramp.
