KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL)- Thousands of families in the Tri-Cities region will have a brighter holiday season thanks to the generosity of the community.
For the 10th year, an event called Thanks for Giving was held inside the Kingsport Civic Auditorium.
It is an event where families in need were able to collect everything from toys, to household items, even clothes, and it was all for free.
The founder of the event, Tammy Street, said with a few hours left to go in the event Saturday they had already seen 1,200 people come through the doors.
“This morning they were lined out at 5 this morning there was a line waiting to get in. This is a big thing for the community, some of these families come in, several of their husbands have just lost their job, or we have a lot of grandparents that are raising their grand kids, you know this is their only means to get Christmas gifts,” Street said.
Street said this will most likely be her last year with the event, and is hoping to find another organization to help take over for years to come.
“The event has actually outgrown me, it’s a lot of work a lot of volunteer hours. We’ve probably had 200 volunteers throughout the week and probably 100 here today. It would break my heart if it didn’t continue, like I said there is a need for it,” Street said.
Street said if there is a club or organization that could take it over she would help with the process of getting the event up and running.
