ETSU holds ‘Milton Marathon’, reads Paradise Lost

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Students and faculty gathered at East Tennessee State University on Thursday to read all 10,000 lines of John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

Participants took turns reading the 17th century epic poem as hundreds of people came throughout the day to listen and to see a collection of rare 17th-20th century illustrated editions of the famous work.

The professor who organized the event, Josh Reid, talked about the importance of Milton’s poem.

“The fact that a poem that’s 350 years old can still have impact, can still speak to us, that can still in many ways transform our lives in small and major ways, that shows the power of literature.”

Students also contributed art inspired by the poem that was on display at the event.
