Community shaken after Johnson City homicide, police continue search for answers

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – On Halloween, police found the body of 72-year-old Otis Church in his Johnson City home. Police believe someone killed Church the day before Halloween and investigators continue the search for his killer.

So many questions and still no answers, people in this community say they are puzzled as to why someone would bother a man who wouldn’t harm anyone.

“He mind his own business and to me he was a good man,” John Collins said.

Collins has lived on St. Louis street for more than a decade. He would often see Otis Church walking to a nearby dollar store. He says church mostly kept to himself.

“I can’t image who could have did it, or who would have did it and why would they did it,” Church said.

Johnson City police detectives say the murder case is one of their top priorities.

“We are processing a ton of evidence. we took out numerous pieces of evidence out of the house and are following up on every little lead that we can right now,” Sergeant Mike Adams said.

Two weeks later and a suspect has not been identified.

“It kind of makes you think, you know at night if somebody knocks on your door and you don’t know who it is,” Collins said.

While he and others in the area wait for answers, Collins says he will be vigilant never forgetting the kind gentle neighbor taken from the community by an act of violence.
