JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – A local organization that builds homes for people in need in the region is having a record breaking year.

By January, the number of homes Appalachia Service Project (or ASP) built will be 13, and leaders said that is the most homes the organization has completed in one year.

Project Manager Will Crumley told News Channel 11 he credits this year’s to learning from past experiences.

“We really have learned over the past few years how to kind of speed things up and simplify our process and identify home owners just kind of make everything run smoother,” said Crumley.

Crumley said volunteer help has also been a huge factor in ASP’s success.

Recently, a group of 40 volunteers from Chicago began working on 3 homes in the region.

“Going around these communities here you can see a lot of people that are in real need and we just love to be able to come and help,” said Volunteer Scott Engle.

From building a home at Bristol Motor Speedway to expanding the organization’s foot print in Kingsport and Johnson City; Crumley said he is excited to witness ASP inching closer to its goal of eliminating substandard housing in Appalachia.
