Johnson’s career night lifts King past Tusculum

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women’s basketball team got off to a fast start on Friday night as they opened their season against Tusculum College. The Tornado went on a 11-0 run early in the first quarter and never looked back, taking the contest 86-63.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After the 11-0 run, King went on another 7-0 to extend the lead to 20-4 in the first quarter.
• Whitney Mitchell had five points in the 11-0 run, including a triple. Johnson had five points in the 7-0 run as well.
• King held their largest lead in the contest 38-13 in the second quarter and led 43-23 at the half.
• Entering the second half the Pioneer offense started to hit some shots, closing the deficit 58-46 with two minutes left in the third quarter.
• King started the fourth quarter with a 65-50 lead, then further extended the lead 74-52 midway through the quarter when Johnson hit a trifecta.
• The Tornado had three players in double figures with Johnson leading the way with 20 points, while Whitney Mitchell added 16 points and six assists.
• Collins chipped in with 15 points as well.
• Amy Van Deventer had eight points and a game high 10 boards in the contest.

FOR THE FOES
• Maelyn Head led the Pioneers with 14 points and four rebounds.
• Callie Patterson and Jasmine Queen had 10 points apiece. Queen pulled down six rebounds as well.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• Johnson’s 20 points is a career-high, breaking her previous high of 17 last season in January against Southern Wesleyan.

UP NEXT
• King next plays Saturday at home against Mars Hill University. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
• Tusculum College plays Saturday as well in the Student Center against Lees-McRae College.
