JONESBOROUGH, TN (WJHL)- A commercial development site is causing concern in one Jonesborough neighborhood as it could soon be bringing a gas station to resident’s backyards. Town leaders have already approved a grading project for that land but have not yet received or considered the site’s plans.
As property developers move forward with the project, residents are hoping to bring construction to a halt. Meadows subdivision resident Mary Wyman said, “To put it bluntly, I don’t want to see something that drastic in that area. There’s no way it’s not going to impact us.”
Wyman along with her neighbors in the meadows subdivision are asking Jonesborough town leaders to consider denying a property owner’s request to build a convenience store at the edge of their subdivision.
Town Administrator Bob Browning said, “That property was zoned commercial to allow for that kind of development or other kinds of commercial development prior to that subdivision even being developed.”
Homeowners say the gas station will bring light pollution, environmental problems and draw even more traffic to an already dangerous intersection.
Browning said, “I’m not saying they don’t have legitimate concerns, but the bottom line of it is this is the kind of thing you look at when you’re buying a piece of property … like, what is the zoning around me, and what could happen?”
Wyman said town leaders may feel differently is it was in their own neighborhood. She said, “If this was in their subdivision or right next to them then I’m sure they would have some different opinions.”
Browning says he can relate to the homeowners’ as commercial property has also been developed within 30 feet of his own home but maintains that every property owner has a right to develop their own land. Browning said, “I understand that someone with commercial property does have rights but so do we, the homeowners, that are going to be affected by that.”
Wyman says she along with other neighbors are likely to attend any upcoming public forums on the topic in an effort to stop the convenience store from being built. She said, “I hope that we get heard and that our issues are going to be taken into consideration and that they find something else to do with that commercial property.”
We reached out to the commercial site’s property owner for a comment but have not heard back at this time. Browning says once the site plans have been submitted to the planning commission, the public will have an opportunity to voice their concerns.
