CROSSVILLE (WATE) –  Three people are dead after a fiery crash on Interstate 40 in Cumberland County Friday afternoon.

The crash was reported just before 2 p.m. Central time near mile marker 320. The Tennessee Highway Patrol says a truck tractor not pulling a trailer was going eastbound when, for unknown reasons, it went into the westbound lanes. It hit a tractor trailer hauling automobiles and a passenger vehicle.

The drivers of all three vehicles were killed in the crash. A passenger in the passenger vehicle was airlifted to UT Medical Center.

Traffic in both directions was being diverted for a time. Westbound lanes are still closed, but one eastbound lane is open and traffic is moving slowly. Westbound traffic is diverted at Peavine Road, exit 322.
