JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL)- Vietnam War vet and 4-time super bowl champion Rocky Bleier made a stop in the tri-cities today to share his own inspirational story at northeast state community college.
Bleier was drafted from Notre Dame to the Pittsburg Steelers in 1968. In his first year as a Steeler, Bleier received his draft notice and was shipped overseas to begin serving his country in the Vietnam War.
The football star was wounded in action and doctors abroad told him he may never walk again but Bleier didn’t let his diagnosis defeat him. Bleier continued training and was not only able to walk again but rejoined the Steelers team in 1970 and going on to earn 4 super bowl championships.
Bleier said, “I think that we can all be inspirations in what we do and our commitments through life. People inspire me that aren’t necessarily in the sports world, they just inspire me by obstacles that they’ve overcome.”
Bleier wrote a book entitled Fighting Back and now enjoys participating in public speaking engagements in the hopes of inspiring others.
