RUSSELL COUNTY, VA (WJHL) – Several emergency responders were called to an overturned coal truck that went off a bridge over Lewis Creek on Route 624 on Wednesday around 8:20 a.m.
According to a news release from Russell County Emergency and Hazardous Materials Coordinator Jess Powers, the driver of the truck was pinned inside for about two hours until he was extricated and taken to a nearby trauma hospital by New Garden Rescue Squad and then transferred to med-flight.
The driver suffered minor injuries.
The road was closed for around eight hours and was reopened at 4 p.m.
Those traveling through the area are asked to use caution when crossing the bridge. Barrels are currently staged at the edge of the bridge without guard rails and metal rails on the north side of the bridge.
