WASHINGTON COUNTY, TN (WJHL)- Polls may have closed at 8pm in Washington County, Tennessee but people waited hours to even see the first precinct start to report results from the election.
Administrator of Elections in Washington County, Maybell Stewart, said that delay in results was simply because of what they believe was a record voter turnout.
Stewart said she has been with the county for 14 years and this election night was unlike any other she has experienced.
“I think a record number of absentee ballots, and of course that took a while for the county board to get through those, and then it took a while for the precincts to start coming in,” Stewart said.
Stewart said Washington County had a more than 69 percent voter turnout, telling us that was most likely a record for the county.
