RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Unofficial election results show at least 68 percent of registered Virginia voters cast a ballot in Tuesday’s presidential race.
With about 99.7 percent of precincts reporting, the results show about 3,858,000 votes were cast in the race. That’s a turnout of about 68.9 percent. But the figure is likely to increase as absentee ballot precincts in areas including Virginia Beach, Richmond and Norfolk were not yet reporting Wednesday afternoon.
Electoral officials are also still determining how many provisional ballots were cast by qualified voters.
Virginia Department of Elections spokeswoman Dena Potter says final turnout figures won’t be available until the results are certified on November 21.
State turnout in 2012’s presidential election was 71.78 percent. It was 74.5 percent in 2008, 71.4 percent in 2004, and 68.5 percent in 2000.
