Bucs Ekern tabbed SoCon Player of the Month

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Nov. 2, 2016) – Junior Fletcher Ekern (Knoxville, Tenn.) was named SoCon Men’s Soccer Player of the Month after his eight-goal performance in the month of October, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
Being recognized by the SoCon for a second time in October, Ekern led the Bucs to a 7-1-1 record in which he netted eight goals. In the nine games, he recorded a pair of game-winning goals (at UNCG and at VMI) along with 16 points in October. On Oct. 8 at UNCG, the Knoxville native recorded ETSU’s first-ever hat trick to lead the Bucs to an overtime win in Greensboro.
From Oct. 8-18, Ekern scored in four straight matches while netting seven goals in that stretch. He was also named SoCon Player of the Week after scoring three total goals at home against Wofford and at VMI.
This season, the striker leads the team in goals (9), points, shots (43), shot percentage (.209), shots on goal (19) and tied for first on the team in game-winning goals. He has started and played in all 17 games and has missed just 267 minutes on the pitch this season.
On a national level, Ekern is 32nd in total goals, 36th in game-winning goals, 60th in total points and 81st in points per game (1.12).
The Bucs will take the next week off as they prepare for the SoCon Men’s Soccer Tournament that is being held at UNCG in Greensboro, N.C. ETSU will play the winner of the No. 4 UNCG/No. 5 Furman match that is being played on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Greensboro. The semifinal match with the Bucs and the winner of the quarterfinal game will take place on Thursday, Nov. 10 with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.
