MOUNT CARMEL, TN (WJHL) – The presidential election found its way into Mount Carmel Elementary School on Tuesday as students participated in a mock student election.
Children were sent into voting booths where they cast their votes for the presidency.
Hundreds of Mount Carmel Elementary students joined children from all over the state that are doing early voting.
Donald Trump ran away with the vote, tallying 183 ballots for 66.8% of the vote.
Trump was followed by Hillary Clinton with 18.2% , Gary Johnson with 8%, and Jill Stein with 6.9% of the vote.
Principal Kelli Campbell said this was a great way to introduce kids to voting and democracy.
“It is our freedom, our right to make our voice heard,” Campbell said. “And we would like to share that with our students and instill that value in them starting at a young age.”
Many of the students that took part in the election said they enjoyed their first opportunity to vote and that they plan to do it again.
