Unaka football team to forfeit playoff game Friday

ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) – The Unaka football team will forfeit Friday’s playoff game against Greenback High school according to a letter the school wrote to the TSSAA on Monday.

The letter stated that most of the players on the team turned in their uniforms following last Friday’s 71-0 loss to Midway.

The team held a meeting Monday where players signed a statement saying they intended not to show up for this Friday’s playoff game against Greenback, despite the coaches’ and administration’s attempt to get the team to play.

Unaka was 1-9 this season.

The following is the letter TSSAA received Monday from Unaka High School officials:

We regret to inform you that Unaka High School will not be participating in the playoff game against Greenback High School scheduled for November 4, 2016.

Despite all actions from our coaches and administration, the team members will not play. The coaches are very upset concerning this action by our football team. After the game against Midway on October 28th, most of our players turned in their uniforms. The coaches tried to talk to them but they were not successful.

We held a meeting today and the football players signed a statement indicating their intention not to show up for this game.”
