SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Oct. 31, 2016) – ETSU junior defensive back Paul Hunter (Denton, Texas) was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week as the league office announced its weekly honors on Monday.
Hunter tied a career high with 11 tackles in Saturday’s game at No. 5 The Citadel. The Denton, Texas native registered five solo tackles and also posted two fumble recoveries. Hunter’s first fumble recovery came on a 4th-and-4 play in the first quarter, while his second recovery came on The Citadel’s opening drive of the second half. The Bulldogs had 1st-and-goal at the 10 and Hunter returned the fumble 21 yards to ETSU’s 32-yard line. The turnover led to a Buccaneer scoring drive as JJ Jerman (Seymour, Tenn.) made a 22-yard field goal.
This marks the third time the Bucs have received a SoCon weekly award this season. Jerman earned Special Teams Player of the Week following ETSU’s season-opening win at Kennesaw State and sophomore quarterback Austin Herink (Cleveland, Tenn.) picked up Offensive Player of the Week honors after the 34-31 over Western Carolina at Bristol Motor Speedway.
The Bucs hit the road for the second straight week as ETSU heads to Macon, Ga. to take on Mercer on Saturday, Nov. 5. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Five Star Stadium.
