GRAY, TN (WJHL) – Karen Matherly began teaching 13 years ago.  Originally, she chose special education inspired by her child who was born with down syndrome.  She Now over a decade later, she continues to inspire young minds as an 8th grade science and social studies teacher.

matherlyMatherly says she remembers 8th grade as one of her favorite and enjoys teaching the young teenagers.  Her goal is to make learning fun and discussion time and group sessions help engage her students.

Matherly credits two of her teachers for having such a strong influence on her life.  She has spent her entire career in the Washington County School system first at Jonesborough Middle School and now at Gray Middle School.

*It’s a blessing to work with young children everyday. It’s hard to describe. I enjoy the sense that’s I’m contributing to their future and making their lives better,” said Matherly.

Matherly told me she enjoys watching some of her initial students grow into adults and knows it won’t be long now before their children start coming through her classes.
