NEW TAZEWELL (WATE) – A New Tazewell police officer has been arrested after investigators say he stole previously seized narcotics collected as evidence by the police department.

Winford Todd Daniels, 38, was charged with official misconduct and theft after a grand jury returned an indictment.

He surrendered to authorities Wednesday afternoon and is being held on a $1,000 bond.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began looking into the missing evidence from the New Tazewell Police Department on August 2.

Investigators say they eventually learned Daniels, a patrolman with the department, took the narcotics between May 5 and July 27.
