New rules affect street musicians in Asheville NC

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Asheville has come up with new rules for outdoor performances, following two years of conflict between street musicians and city officials.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported the new rules will affect people who work for fun or a living on the street, including musical performers and statue impersonators.

Asheville City Council approved the new rules Tuesday that were worked out by performers and officials.

The new rules came from concerns that people watching performances were spilling off the sidewalks onto streets. The other concern was that the performances were causing passers-by to have to walk in the street, increasing the chance of being hit by a car.

Icons indicating musical performance sites will be installed. No other audible performance will be allowed within 120 feet of the designated sites.
