KPD officers search for man accused of hit-and-run, theft at Advance Auto Parts

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – Kingsport Police Department officers are currently searching for a man who reportedly took a battery from a local Advance Auto Parts store and was involved in a hit-and-run with an off-duty Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Monday.

According to a KPD news release, officers were called to Advance Auto Parts, 1121 E. Stone Drive in Kingsport to investigate a shoplifting.

A man reportedly walked into the store and left the store with an Optima battery — valued around $215 — without paying for it.

An employee at the store following the man out of the store to confront him.

An off-duty Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office deputy was in the store as a customer during the incident and stepped in to help.

According to the release, the deputy approached the man in the parking and the man got inside a vehicle. The deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer and reached inside the vehicle to turn off the ignition, where the man drove away in the vehicle dragging the deputy a short distance.

The deputy received scrapes and bruises.

The man’s vehicle hit an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot.

The suspect’s vehicle is believed to be a white Honda Civic, or a similar style vehicle, with black rims and a loud exhaust. The vehicle may also have minor damage to the front driver’s side corner of the vehicle.

According to the release, a female passenger was also inside the suspect’s vehicle at the time of the incident.

Store surveillance photos captured the man entering and leaving the store.

Anyone with information is asked to call KPD Criminal Investigations Division at 229-9429 or call Kingsport Central Dispatch at 246-9111.
