KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – Kingsport Police Department officers are currently searching for a man who reportedly took a battery from a local Advance Auto Parts store and was involved in a hit-and-run with an off-duty Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Monday.
According to a KPD news release, officers were called to Advance Auto Parts, 1121 E. Stone Drive in Kingsport to investigate a shoplifting.
A man reportedly walked into the store and left the store with an Optima battery — valued around $215 — without paying for it.
An employee at the store following the man out of the store to confront him.
An off-duty Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office deputy was in the store as a customer during the incident and stepped in to help.
According to the release, the deputy approached the man in the parking and the man got inside a vehicle. The deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer and reached inside the vehicle to turn off the ignition, where the man drove away in the vehicle dragging the deputy a short distance.
The deputy received scrapes and bruises.
The man’s vehicle hit an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot.
The suspect’s vehicle is believed to be a white Honda Civic, or a similar style vehicle, with black rims and a loud exhaust. The vehicle may also have minor damage to the front driver’s side corner of the vehicle.
According to the release, a female passenger was also inside the suspect’s vehicle at the time of the incident.
Store surveillance photos captured the man entering and leaving the store.
