JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – A ribbon cutting was held Thursday celebrating phase one of the Wing Deer Mountian Bike Park.
It is approximately one mile of beginner level trail.
The park is a partnership between the City of Johnson City who supplied the land and the Tri-Cities chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) who will develop and maintain the trail.
Phase two and three are set to open in spring of 2017 with nearly five more miles of trail.
“We have several of our other Tri-Cities facilities, Kingsport and Bristol both have trails, but Johnson City did not and there seemed to be a need and a growing desire of people in the mountain biking community to see this”, said Jim Hughes of Johnson City Parks and Recreation.
This will complete the city’s first true Mountian bike park.
“The Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association Tri-Cities would like to thank the city for the opportunity to bring Mountain bike trails to Wing Deer park”, added Marc Upton who is the trail liaison for SORBA.
The park is a component of the bikeways/greenways program and is part of a long-term plan to connect all of the city through bikeways.
The entrance of the trail is located at the parking area for the disc golf course.
