Carter Co. deputies charge member of Roan Mountain Vol. Fire Department with arson

CARTER COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Carter County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested and charged a member of the Roan Mountain Volunteer Fire Department with arson Tuesday, following an investigation into a brush fire on Highway 19E.

According to CCSO news release, Christopher Hughes was seen leaving a property in the 7700 block of Highway 19E just before the fire.

Hughes reportedly returned to the scene a short time later with a fire truck to put out the fire.

According to the release, the owner of the property would not let Hughes back on the property, and the owner extinguished the fire.

Officer Christian Carrier found Hughes at the Roan Mountain Fire Station, where he learned Hughes was member of the fire department.

Carrier also found two gas cans in the bed of Hughes’ truck.

Hughes was arrested and charged with arson and was taken to Carter County Jail, where he was being held on $15,000 bond.

According to the release, Hughes’ court date was set for Dec. 13 in Carter County General Sessions Court.

An investigation into the arson is ongoing.
