JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Children in the Tri-Cities and even those who are still kids at heart got the chance to hit the pavement Saturday for the Kiwanis Club’s Soap Box Derby speed trials.
Dozens of children and their families came out to enjoy the nearly 1,000 feet of track and test drive a handmade car.
“They get kits, they build things, they are going to learn. They learn about mathematics, they learn about science and aerodynamics it’s just a great way to grow these children in our community,” Kiwanis club member, Shannon Jones said.
Jones also said there hasn’t been a soap box derby race in Johnson City in 40 years. The Soap Box Derby Race is coming up in May and the Kiwanis Club is looking for corporate sponsors to help them continue to raise money for local youth.
