Johnson City commissioners pass Gray property annexation, rezoning ordinance in 3-2 votes

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Thursday night, Johnson City commissioners heard the third and final readings of a proposal to annex and rezone a small portion of Gray.

In three-to-two votes, the Commission gave the thumbs up to both annex and rezone the Bank of Tennessee property and an adjacent lot on Bobby Hicks Highway.

Both properties were combined for the commission vote but Bank of Tennessee tells us their request is to acquire city services.

The rezoning portion of the commission vote would allow the owner of the nearby property to put a liquor store there.

Mayor Stout and Commissioners Brock and Banyas voted ‘yes.’ Vice Mayor Tomita and Commissioner Van Brocklin voted ‘no’ to those votes.

There was a public hearing opportunity at the meeting tonight, but no one from the public spoke.

“Just the realization that there’s probably so much has been said, there’s probably not much left to be said,” Vice Mayor David Tomita said.

Tomita said the next steps are out of the city’s hands now, but he does wish the builders and operators the best of luck.
