JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL)- U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) met with local mayors Tuesday in a closed door meeting in Johnson City.
News Channel 11 was allowed in at the end of that meeting. Alexander said during the meeting he talked with leaders about problems with the Affordable Care Act. He also said he talked about trying to change the “overtime rule,” which will require thousands of Tennesseans to punch a time clock instead of being salaried employees starting in December. According to Alexander, they also talked about the Marketplace Fairness Act which would allow cities and the state to collect sales tax from out of state sellers.
After the meeting, we asked the senior member of the Senate his thoughts about his party’s presidential nominee.
“I learned a long time ago that the people didn’t elect me to tell them how to vote. I’m a Republican and I support the Republican ticket and I think both candidates have driven this presidential race down to about as low a level as it can go,” Alexander said.
He was also asked about his thoughts following the release of a 2005 recording of Donald Trump making lewd comments about women.
“I thought those comments were disgusting and that by making comments like that you drive this presidential campaign down to the lowest level that I’ve ever seen,” Alexander said.
When asked if the Trump ticket has his vote, Alexander told us he is supporting the Republican nominees.
