(CNN) – The Red Planet has turned to gold in NASA’s newest images. The new images of Mars are from NASA’s Maven Mission.
The colors here were tweaked to show an ultraviolet glow from the Martian atmosphere – also known as “night glow.”
Nightglow is a common planetary phenomenon in which the sky faintly glows even in the complete absence of external light.
It can be used to show how winds circulate at high altitudes, how ozone amounts change over the seasons and how afternoon clouds form over giant Martian volcanoes.
The white images that appear and disappear show clouds forming over Mars’ prominent volcanoes.
