MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2016) — Coming off last year’s stellar season, the Milligan College women’s basketball team has been selected to finish at the top of the Appalachian Athletic Conference, according to the preseason coaches’ poll.
Milligan received nine of the 12 first-place votes and a total of 139 voting points to claim the top spot. Bryan (131) received the other three first-place votes and claimed second. The top five was rounded out by Tennessee Wesleyan (117), Point (106) and Union (80).
Milligan ended the year with an impressive 23-8 overall record, 17-3 in the AAC, to claim the title of regular season champions. They earned a berth to the NAIA Division II National Championship tournament for the sixth time since Head Coach Rich Aubrey took over the program.
“I’d rather our team be picked first than last but ultimately it doesn’t mean anything. Wins and championships are earned on the court,” Aubrey said. “With that said, we are excited and optimistic about the season ahead. I expect our conference to be deep and competitive from top to bottom.”
Even with losing starters Allison Jones and Callie Cox, the Buffs will be nothing shy of experienced as they head into this season. Seniors Lindsee Price, Kelly Barnett and Hayley Wyrick all return with experience in the starting lineup, and look to carry on the standard set last year. Wyrick will return from injury to add to the dominant offensive presence set by Price and sophomore Sarah Robinson.
Robinson returns for her sophomore season after coming off a remarkable freshman year. Robinson earned an all-AAC first team, AAC all-freshman and all-defensive team nods, as well as Freshman of the Year.
Milligan will open this season on Tuesday, Nov. 1, against University of Pikeville on the road. The Buffs first home game is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 5:30 p.m. against Tennessee Wesleyan University.
