KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL)- The City of Kingsport is honoring local law enforcement in a unique way. On Tuesday, city crews painted thin, blue lines on the streets surrounding the Kingsport Justice Center as a way to show appreciation for police officers.

“We’re proud to show support for those individuals who work so hard to keep us safe,” said Kingsport City Manager Jeff Fleming. “This is just a small way to help bring attention to the great work our police department does.”

The project came as a welcome surprise to members of the Kingsport Police Department. “We’re really taken aback by it,” said Tom Patton, public information officer with Kingsport police. “While we’re seeing a lot of turmoil and divide in other areas of the country we’re seeing the exact opposite here in Kingsport. [We] have outstanding citizen support and government support here in Kingsport for law enforcement. It’s a really great place to be the police”

Kingsport Mayor John Clark said Shelby and Clay streets will be sporting the new lines for the foreseeable future.
