JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Johnson City firefighters are once again sharing their concerns about their chief, but this time it’s at the city’s request for feedback.
The Johnson City Human Resources Department, with the help of an independent consultant through MTAS, is taking a survey of firefighters.
Johnson City provided us with a copy of that survey. Among other things, it asked specific questions about the chief, his ability to lead, his level of professionalism and workplace harassment.
Firefighters have remained vocal about Chief Mark Scott for more than a year now. They first raised concerns in an internal investigation and more recently, shared their concerns with us. The International Association of Fire Fighters even gave the chief a vote of no confidence.
As a result of those concerns, the Johnson City City Commission directed the city manager to come up with an employee relations strategy for the fire department. That strategy is due Thursday.
In the meantime, City Manager Pete Peterson says he and HR wanted to give employees the chance to share their thoughts anonymously.
“It’s an opportunity for them to let us know what’s on their mind,” Peterson said. “We’re just giving them an opportunity to communicate with us about what’s on their minds and hopefully we can get some good ideas and make some enhancements to what we currently offer our employees and get to a better place than we are today.”
The city hopes to have the results tabulated in December. The fire department is the second city department to complete a survey. Solid Waste was the first. Eventually, the city will ask employees in all departments to voluntarily take part in the survey process.
