KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Baseball program has assembled a Top 20-ranked recruiting class for its fifth consecutive year, as Baseball America recently tabbed the Vols’ 2016 class as No. 18 in the nation.
Tennessee is one of nine Southeastern Conference schools with teams listed in BA’s Top 25, including Ole Miss (No. 1), Florida (No. 3), LSU (No. 4), South Carolina (No. 11), Arkansas (No. 12), Vanderbilt (No. 14), Auburn (No. 21) and Georgia (No. 24).
“I’m very pleased that the efforts of recruiting coordinator Aric Thomas, along with the assistance of Larry Simcox and the entire staff, were recognized,” Head Coach Dave Serrano said. “We feel that this class of exciting players, in time, will prove its worth with the arms, position players and depth it will add to our program.”
Last season, Perfect Game ranked the Vols’ 2015 signing class as No. 12 in the country. The 2014 class was named No. 13 in the nation by Perfect Game, while Baseball America put UT’s 2013 class as No. 15 overall. Serrano’s first-ever recruitment class for Tennessee also earned a No. 20 overall ranking by BA in 2012.
Among the Volunteers’ 17 total newcomers, 14 are true freshmen along with two junior college transfers and one graduate transfer. Within the group, Sevier County native and Tennessee’s 2016 Gatorade Player of the Year Zach Linginfelter enters his first season with the Orange and White after being drafted by the New York Yankees in the 16th round of the 2016 Major League Draft.
Tennessee’s 2016 class consists of six new pitchers along with two catchers, five infielders and four outfielders.
