Second Harvest featured in new National Geographic book

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL-TV) – A tri-cities food bank is prominently featured in a new book on feeding the hungry.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee was one of the food banks selected from around 200 nationwide to share stores of our clients and agencies in a recently published book by National Geographic titled “Feeding America, Stories of Hunger and Hope”.

“Our food bank was really honored to be selected as one of the food banks out of the 200 food banks nationwide to be featured in the book, to really feature our area, rural America, and feature some of the clients that we serve that depend on food assistance thru our programs or thru our agencies,” Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee Rhonda Chafin said. “I think they were touched by the stories that they heard because they are real stories, stories that we believe if folks know about, they would really want to make a difference. They would want to make sure that everybody in this region and throughout the nation should always have enough food.”

This book is not available for purchase but has been distributed to elected official across America and in our region over the past few months as an advocacy tool to show that Hunger in America is a significant problem and to encourage action at the national, state and community levels to solve it. Second Harvest plans to send copies of the book to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump encouraging them and their parties to support legislation that impacts hunger relief.

“This book was really designed to give to our federal legislators, our local legislators, to shed some light on the hunger situation here in Northeast Tennessee, rural America, but also on a national level.”, Chafin said.

Crews from National Geographic spent a week in the region last year and got the see many of the programs that Second Harvest offers and also got to meet first hand many people who use these programs.

“What it really does, we believe, is tell some very powerful stories about hunger,” Chafin said. “They had to look at rural America and areas that were really hit hard, and our area really has lot of need. We have over 90,000 people who are in poverty, well over 70,000 people are food-insecure in our area and we serve 40,000 individuals on the average every month. So they see the need here and wanted to shed some light on that.”
