BRISTOL, VA (WJHL) – Tuesday, the new board of Bristol Virginia Utilities met and discussed what’s next after an audit found 57 issues that needed improvement.
The audit looked at the period between 2010 and 2015 – a time period that sparked a federal investigation into the utility that resulted in nine convictions.
The investigation also lead to a state law that overhauled the BVU board.
BVU CEO Don Bowman says the audit shows millions of taxpayer money spent, many times with no documentation to back it up.
Bowman says the audit shows the money was spent on failed economic development projects, NASCAR tickets, and renting private planes for business trips.
Currently, the new BVU board is looking at the problems and writing new policies to make sure these oversights don’t happen again.
