TRI-CITIES (WJHL) – On Sunday Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam called on Trump to step down and let vice presidential candidate Mike Pence lead the ticket as the nominee.

But top Republicans in the Tri-Cities said Tuesday they are they still supporting their party’s candidate.

They were words that sparked a national conversation.

“I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star they let you do it,” Donald Trump said in a leaked video dating more than 10 years back.

“I think anybody who heard it kind of like scratching your fingers on a chalkboard is how that affected me,” Congressman Phil Roe said.

“I don’t know anyone who can defend that tape,” said Representative Jon Lundberg.

Similar responses from local politicians who also share a similar outlook on the future, still in support of Donald Trump.

Virginia Congressman Morgan Griffith said in a statement:

“Donald Trump’s statements from 11 years ago are repugnant and reprehensible.

But we have only two candidates who in reality can be elected president. One has an economic plan that can realistically benefit the 9th District of Virginia and has agreed to appoint Justices to the Supreme Court who will be conservative defenders of our Constitution. The other candidate has promised and demonstrated she will do the opposite.”

Tennessee’s Roe and Lundberg said they support Trump because they support his policies.

“The two issues I think that are on most Americans minds are safety – are we secure and safe in this country,” said Roe. “Number two is jobs. I just don’t think the current policies of the administration are doing those things.”

Heading into November, Lundberg said voters need to put that leaked tape of Trump into perspective.

“Bill Clinton’s actions in the Oval Office are far worse than words, and his wife – the democratic nominee’s support of that and victimization I think says a great deal about her character,” said Lundberg.

“If you think we’re heading in the right direction, and Hillary is your candidate. If you do not then you need to take a different direction,” Roe said.
