JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL)- U.S. Congressman Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Johnson City) released a statement to News Channel 11 Sunday calling Trump’s recently revealed lewd comments about women “disgusting, inappropriate and reprehensible.”
However Roe is not asking the Republican nominee to step down at this point as TN Governor Bill Haslam called for earlier Sunday.
“As the grandfather of two young girls, I find Donald Trump’s comments disgusting, inappropriate and reprehensible. I always taught my sons that women should be treated with respect – period. Like many Americans, in the days leading up to this election, I will be doing a lot of prayerful consideration. Hillary Clinton is not the right direction for our country, but there is no excuse for Donald Trump’s words and actions.” -U.S. Congressman Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Johnson City)
In a statement from Haslam released Sunday he said in part, “It is time for the good of the nation and the Republican Party for Donald Trump to step aside and let Gov. Mike Pence assume the role as the party’s nominee. If he does not step aside, I will write in a Republican for the office of President.”
After Trump won the Republican nomination, Roe said he fully supported him. However, Haslam never endorsed Trump, one of the only prominent Tennessee Republicans not to do so.
