Local volunteers helping with Hurricane Matthew relief efforts

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – Tri-Cities locals are stepping up to help United States citizens affected by Hurricane Matthew.

The American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee deployed an Emergency Response Vehicle and four people to Florida to help with relief efforts.

“They are pre-positioning people so that we have them there so they are ready to help as soon as they can,” said Dawn Day, Disaster Program Manager of Northeast Tennessee’s Red Cross.

The American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee also said they expect more local volunteers to leave as needs are determined.

To make a donation to the Red Cross Disaster Relief, visit redcross.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS. Or you can text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

The Red Cross says it has already established shelters. Also, more than 500 disaster workers and 90 response vehicles standing are by in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

It says it is prepared to open or support more than 100 evacuation shelters and 30 emergency response vehicles over the next several days in Florida.

In South Carolina, it plans to open 19 evacuation shelters and dozens more are prepared to open in Georgia and North Carolina.

In addition, the Red Cross has dozens of trailer loads of sheltering supplies, ready-to-eat meals, clean-up kits and comfort kits containing personal hygiene products.

October 12th – Focus on operating temporary shelters, managing warehouses or facilities, fleet management
9:00 a.m. – Disaster Services Overview
10:00 a.m. – Shelter fundamentals
1:00 p.m. – Logistics

October 13th
9:00 a.m. – Disaster Services Overview
10:00 a.m. – Feeding Fundamentals
1:00 a.m. – Ready, Set, Go
