JOHNSON CITY, TN- The ETSU men’s basketball team is coming off a great 2015-2016 season, posting a 24-12 record while coming up just short of a trip to the big dance in Steve Forbes’ first season at the helm.
ETSU graduated some big time talent in the offseason, including leading scorer Ge-lawn Guyn, College Slam Dunk Championship competitor Deuce Bello and 1,000-point scorer Lester Wilson. But the team is confident in the group they have assembled over the summer.
“I believe this team has a chance to be really, really good at the end,” said Forbes. “We’ll be different than we were last year. We’re a lot bigger. We’ll play a lot more inside out than we did a year ago but I really like the guys we have returning and I like the news guys. They’ve really gelled with our guys and we have great chemistry.”
The Bucs came up a few points short of their goal to make the NCAA tournament a year ago. Their consolation prize was a trip to Las Vegas to compete in the inaugural Vegas 16. This year’s squad won’t be satisfied with a return trip to Nevada, hoping to take the next step forward and go dancing in 2017.
“Last year was a great start for our program but that’s not where we want to be,” said Forbes. “We don’t want to be in Vegas unless they’re hosting a NCAA tournament in Vegas. We want to be in the NCAA tournament and we want to win the league and we missed the tournament by 6 points. So we’ve just got to continue on that path to improve.”
