Death row inmate convicted in 1983 murder of Elizabethton woman dies of natural causes

NASHVILLE, TN (WJHL) – An inmate on death row convicted in the 1983 beating death of an elderly Elizabethton woman, died from what appears to be natural causes Wednesday while in the Riverbend Maximum Security Prison.

According to a news release from the Tennessee Department of Correction, David McNish, 63, was found unresponsive at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday by medical staff at RMSI’s infirmary.

McNish was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Gladys Smith, an elderly widow in Elizabethton and a neighbor of McNish’s parents.

He was sentenced to death in Carter County in 1984.
