GREENE COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – An investigation spanning several counties in East Tennessee is intensifying. Tennessee highway patrol is trying to track down the person responsible for pulling the trigger and shooting cars along portions of interstate 81.
Cases are already under investigation in Hamblen and Jefferson counties. Authorities with THP tell us they are zeroing in their search between mile markers 8 and 12 on interstate 81.
Investigators are leaning on people in the Greene County area to come forward with information.
June Pinkston has lived in Greene County all of her life and this is the first time she has heard of people being “shot at” while driving along interstate 81.
“Unsuspecting people driving up the interstate might get shot at or actually shot, that is a really
scary thing,” June Pinkston said.
Sergeant Noah Click with Tennessee Highway Patrol says over the weekend troopers stepped up patrols to track down suspects, even knocking on several doors to drum up leads.
In September there were three shootings along interstate 81 all in Hamblen county. Troopers are also focusing their attention on greene county because of a similar shooting that happened along interstate 81 back in June.
“Regardless of wether it is Greene County or Hamblen County, anywhere in that area we ask them, when they are driving up and down the interstate just be a little more extra focused and be aware of there surrounding,” Sergeant Noah Click said.
Click says drivers need to be more cautious at night. June Pinkston says for now she will be on alert, and advises others to do the same.
“I think what everybody has to do is be vigilant, take care and look around and see what is going on around you,” June Pinkston said.
Highway Patrol says the shootings appear to be random and tell us fortunately, no one has been injured. Anyone with information about the shootings along interstate 81 is asked to call 911 or your local law enforcement office immediately.
